What is Campaign Life Coalition Alberta?

Campaign Life Coalition Alberta (CLC Alberta) is the provincial branch of Campaign Life Coalition based in Toronto.  We begin with the premise that all human life is precious and sacred.  At all levels of government, however, there are laws and practices that are contrary to this principle.  CLC Alberta aims to promote life-affirming legislation at these various government levels though focusing on Alberta in particular.  We support legislation and proposed legislation that defends the sanctity of life and oppose threats to life such as abortion, euthanasia and doctor-assisted suicide.

CLCA focuses on two main groups whose right to life are currently threatened: the unborn and the sick / elderly.

Currently in Canada, an unborn human being is not legally a person and so does not have any rights at all, including the right to life.  This leaves the unborn vulnerable to several threats: primarily abortion but also certain types of medical and scientific research and procedures.  CLC Alberta's primary goal is to help bring about legislation that include the unborn as persons under the law thus guarantying their right to life.  Our secondary goals are to reduce the number of abortions by reducing or eliminating funding for abortions, requiring that anyone seeking an abortion is fully informed when making their decision and encouraging alternatives to abortion such as adoption.

The primary threats to the lives of the sick and elderly are euthanasia and doctor-assisted suicide.  Though they are already guaranteed the right to life, certain laws and proposed laws aim to circumvent this right.  We believe that a sick and/or elderly person has as much right to a happy life as a young and healthy person.  CLCA therefore promotes legislation that funds such things as palliative care.
